英雄莫問出處是由元末明初詩人楊基的一首詩中的一句，衍化而成，這首詩名字叫做《感懷》，原詩為：

    鄧禹南陽來，仗策歸光武?？酌髋P隆中，不即事先主。英雄各有見，何必問出處。孫曹與更始，未可同日語。向非昭烈賢，三顧猶未許。君子當(dāng)識(shí)時(shí)，守身如處女。

    楊基，字孟載，號(hào)眉庵，“吳中四杰”之一，其詩風(fēng)清俊纖巧，時(shí)人稱之為“五言射雕手”。元朝末年，楊基曾入張士誠幕府，為丞相府記室，后辭去，明初為滎陽知縣，累官至山西按察使，后被讒奪官，罰服勞役，死于工所。

    楊基詩中的鄧禹是東漢開國功臣，南陽新野人；更始為劉玄，他是王莽新朝末年，綠林軍擁立的一個(gè)皇帝，因其年號(hào)為更始，史稱更始帝，后被被赤眉軍沙海。更始即位后，許多人向其薦舉鄧禹，但鄧禹不肯相從，后來他聽說光武帝劉秀安定河北，鄧禹就驅(qū)馬北渡黃河，追隨劉秀。

    孔明即眾所周知的三國時(shí)期的諸葛亮，孫曹為孫權(quán)和曹操，昭烈為劉備。諸葛亮在出山之前，隱居在隆中，常以管仲、樂毅自比，劉備三顧茅廬，諸葛亮被其誠心所打動(dòng)，才答應(yīng)出山，輔佐其逐鹿天下。
