DESCRIPTION: 

The Akt proteins (Akt1, Akt2 and Akt3) are a family of cytoplasmic serine-threonine kinases that form a critical junction at the intersection of multiple cell signaling pathways. Also known as PKB, Akt is activated by multiple extracellular signals by phosphorylation at specific residues and is subsequently translocated to the plasma membrane. Akt is involved in the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway and other signaling pathways. The oncogenic properties of the Akt proteins are seen following mutation or constitutive activation in several different malignancies. Activity of the Akt proteins is negatively by PTEN, a protein tyrosine phosphatase tumor suppressor. Akt has also been shown to function as a survival factor in many cell types, an activity mediated by the phosphorylation of members of the bcl-2 family of proteins such as BAD.
